A Stunning Start to 2025: Budget Phones Shine in Photo of the Week
One might assume that our Photo of the Week initiative would be dominated by high-end devices like the latest iPhone and Galaxy models. However, the first edition of 2025 has defied expectations, with budget-friendly phones stealing the spotlight from flagship devices.
This edition is a testament to the fact that technical specifications alone do not define great photography. A skilled photographer who knows how to maximize their device’s capabilities can create breathtaking images regardless of price.
We appreciate everyone who shared their incredible moments and stories, demonstrating that remarkable photography is possible with modest equipment. With so many outstanding submissions, we are delighted to feature one winner and two honorable mentions.
This Week’s Best Photo
Captured by Sean Burns - A $499 Phone Takes the Crown
Using a Google Pixel 7a, Sean Burns captured a mesmerizing sunrise in Derbyshire, England. His image showcases the warm hues of the morning golden hour while beautifully illustrating the interplay between sunlight and morning mist. Despite its modest $499 price tag upon release in 2023, the Pixel 7a’s camera effectively balances exposure across the sky, grass, and fog-shrouded trees, delivering a stunning shot.
Honorable Mentions
Debasish Mandal - A Spectacular Sunset with a Budget Device
The first honorable mention goes to Debasish Mandal, who documented what he calls “the most profound sunset I have ever enjoyed.” Captured using a Xiaomi Poco X3, his image conveys the beauty of the moment without any edits, proving that even a budget phone from 2020 can produce breathtaking results.
Lyubomir Popov - A Striking Contrast in Paris
Our second honorable mention is awarded to Lyubomir Popov for his stunning image of his son at the Jardins du Trocadéro in Paris. Taken with a Sony Xperia 1 V, this 2023 flagship phone masterfully plays with contrast. The stark juxtaposition between the small boy and the towering water jets, combined with the interplay of light and shadows, creates a compelling composition.
